Ever do one of those totally stupid things that makes you feel like an idiot? You know, one of those things that has you looking over your shoulder to see if anyone else saw, even though you know you're totally alone? One of those things that makes you feel soooooo foolish, but is too good to keep to yourself, and you find yourself laughing so hard in the telling of it to your friends, that you spend the next half hour wiping tears off your cheeks? Well I have too, and here's where you'll find all those things that I've done that make me say 'Well Duh!!'
Out of sheer jealousy of a good friend's
wonderfully easy to navigate site, I decided to re-do my site,
even though I had just finished a 1 month makeover of the
whole thing only about a week ago. So there I was, searching
the internet for as much information on iframes as I could
find, since that's what she uses. Ok, so I think I have these
iframes figured out, time to get started on the layout. What
you see now is what I decided on. The banner was made for
me by Paul, and I wanted to keep it as simple and clean as
I could. So there I was with this big graphic just staring
at me in PSP7. Hmmmmmmm now I have to cut it up into pieces
so my layout works. So I use the handy dandy little selection
too, type in my dimensions, cut, paste as a new image, and
export as a gif file. I proceed to do this with the entire
graphic then shut down PSP7 (not saving my big graphic in
psp format I might add). Now to build my page!! I open my
html editor and start on my table, inserting the iframes where
they are needed. Yippee!! After only about an hour of playing
around with it, I finally have my table all completed. I'm
so proud I make even myself sick! Now to preview my masterpiece.
I click on the button to preview it in IE and my bubble is
totally burst when I see this wierd looking jigsaw puzzle
in my browser window. Whatever could I have done wrong???
Well, to make a long story short, I slaved over my html code
for the better part of the day and finally gave up around
11pm, when I went to a chat for a group that I belong to.
I was telling Manda in the chat about the problem I was having
and she says ... OMG!! You're doing what?? ... Then she proceeds
to tell me about one of the 4000 functions of PSP7 that I
haven't tried out yet. The image slicer! Took me only about
5 minutes to figure out how to use it, another 15 minutes
to reconstruct my layout graphic, and about 10 minutes to
set up the slicer, and export not just the cut up graphic,
but the html file that puts it all back together!! Sheesh
if that's not a Well Duh! I don't know what is!!
Ok, so yesterday's fiasco was nothing compared to what I did today! I spent several hours converting my website to my new layout and testing it all out to make sure it all worked nicely. All I had to do was recreate my homepage, create a webrings page, then get it all uploaded. I had inadvertently overwritten my index.html file when I created my new layout (well duh!), so I was planning on getting the text for my homepage from what was uploaded online. Well ..... Paul called me and I couldn't stop talking about the new toy I learned how to use yesterday and I really wanted him to see my new layout, so I told him I was going to upload it all so he could see it, and I'd do the webrings page later. So off I go, happily uploading and overwriting all my html files, uploading my new graphics for the layout, and chatting away like a magpie all the while to Paul. Then it hits me! Well DUH!!! I hadn't gotten the text from my homepage before I overwrote index.html. Oh well, I thought, I'll just recreate my homepage, it won't take long. Yikes!!!!! One of my webrings was on that page! I frantically start searching through saved emails, hoping in vain to find the one with that ring fragment in it. Waaaaaaaaaaa I don't have it anymore and I don't know my id# for that ring. To make matters worse, this ring has over 800 people in it! I spent hours searching through the list for my site so I could get my id# and log in to change the url of the page it would be on and get my html fragment!! I tell ya, I don't know how much more I can take this week!!! But wait, the day isn't over yet! While searching through the webring list, looking for my id#, a friend logs onto msn messenger and starts chatting with me. In our conversation, she tells me that her webring links aren't working in the webring that I started. Hmmmm.....off I go to see what could be wrong with her webring fragment. For some reason, when we click on her 'next' and 'list' links, we get an error message that says that 'dollcontest is not a valid ring id' . Too strange! I can log in using that ring id, so what do they mean by it's not a valid ring id?? Well, I finally found the problem and started ribbing her something fierce! She had 2 = signs in her code for next and list, and the message we were getting was really =dollcontest is not a valid ring id. Well, I start laughing and laughing and totally forget about my misery in trying to find my own id# for that other webring. I start telling her that the = fairy must have visited her LOL. She mentions something about how she had been to an html class about a week ago, and I asked her if it was on the correct placement of = signs LOL. THEN........she tells me that she has found the email that was sent to her when she signed up for my ring and there are 2 = signs in the code there! Sheesh!! It was ME that had messed up the code, and I had to email all the members and tell them of my blunder! Well Duh!!
